The Health and Wellness Information Center @Portsmouth Public Library (HWIC) is a safe place for everyone to find accurate information about their health concerns. The mission of the information center is to help Portsmouth residents find information regarding their health concerns and connect them to health resources within the community. The vision of the information center is every person is empowered to invest in their health through quality health resources and services.

Your HWIC is located at the Main Library on 601 Court Street. Staff who have completed consumer health information certification will be on-hand on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 – 5 pm to help you. Books and other materials are available during normal library hours. For more information call 393-8501.

The Health and Wellness Information Center @Portsmouth Public Library is a partnership with Portsmouth Health Department (PHD), Bon Secours Maryview Hospital, Portsmouth Department of Behavioral Healthcare Services, Portsmouth Department of Social Services, Eastern Virginia Medical School Brickell Library, Portsmouth Family Medicine, and Portsmouth Emergency Medical Services. HWIC is funded by a grant from Portsmouth General Hospital Foundation.

Partners
Portsmouth Public Library System – Serves the city of Portsmouth, Virginia and surrounding areas with four locations throughout Portsmouth and numerous online resources and collections available. Portsmouth Public Library’s Health and Wellness Information Center is located inside Portsmouth Main Library located at 601 Court St.

Portsmouth Health Department – The Portsmouth Health Department is dedicated to promoting, protecting, and preserving a healthy and safe community.

Portsmouth Behavioral Healthcare Services – Serving the Portsmouth Community Providing mental health, intellectual disability, substance abuse and co-occurring services to the citizens of Portsmouth since 1969.

Portsmouth Fire and Rescue – The Mission of the Portsmouth Fire Department is to protect the lives and property of the citizens and visitors of the City of Portsmouth against fire, sudden medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and natural or man-made disasters. The department employs 255 highly trained Firefighters, Paramedics, and support staff, who respond to approximately 17,000 calls for service each year.

Portsmouth Department of Social Services – To enhance the quality of life by strengthening families and individuals, promoting safety, and self sufficiency through agency programs and community partnership. The Portsmouth Department of Social Services touches the lives of all citizens by providing programs and services that ensure the health and welfare of our citizens.

Bon Secours Maryview – Bon Secours Hampton Roads offers all the families in our region a wide variety of services from orthopaedics and cancer care to primary care practices. Our employees are committed to working in the spirit of our founding sisters, it’s the mission at Bon Secours Hampton Roads to treat the whole person — mind, body and spirit, to bring compassion to health care, and to be good help to those in need. Bon Secours strives to provide exceptional, personalized care for all families in our region.

Eastern Virginia Medical School – EVMS has graduated over 6,000 medical professionals since its opening in 1973. The students benefit from the latest in medical modeling and simulation technology and pioneering standardized patient programs. EVMS offers over 10 Health Professional degree and certificate programs along with MD curriculum. EVMS has 150 full time physicians caring for over 1,500 patients daily throughout the Hampton Roads region. EVMS is committed to training high-quality health care professionals.

Portsmouth Family Medicine – Member of the EVMS Medical group, Portsmouth Family Medicine employs 18 resident physicians and 8 EVMS faculty physicians committed to building positive, supportive relationships with patients and their families.

Edward E. Brickell Medical Sciences LibraryThe EVMS Brickell Medical Sciences Library provides information resources and services to EVMS students, faculty, clinicians and staff and to members of the Hampton Roads community. The Brickell Library is open to the public during staffed hours, and all of the information resources can be used by members of the community from within the library.

Health & Wellness Resource Center

Health and Wellness Resource Center and Alternative Health Module – Provides instant access to carefully compiled and trusted medical reference materials. Includes nearly 400 health/medical journals, hundreds of pamphlets, over 700 health-related videos from partner Healthology, Inc., and articles from 2,200 general interest publications in addition to a broad collection of Gale reference titles. Material contained in this Resource Center is intended for informational purposes only.

Teen Health & Wellness

The NEW Teen Health & Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers—the award-winning, critically acclaimed online resource—provides middle school and high school students with nonjudgmental, straightforward, standards-aligned, curricular and self-help support. Topics include diseases, drugs, alcohol, nutrition, mental health, suicide, bullying, green living, financial literacy, digital literacy, and more. Articles are correlated to state, national, and provincial standards, including Common Core English Language Arts.
