Branch History

Manor Branch opened on January 6, 1973 in the same building as the (then) Manor High School – now Wilson High School.  It was built in this way as an experiment to combine public and school libraries.  However, this did not work out as planned and the two libraries operate as completely separate entities.  The branch was expanded in 1987 by taking in an unused classroom on one side – which became the Children’s Room, and the former lobby – which became part of the larger circulation desk area.

Manor is very much a community library and meeting place, serving people who live in this area, midcity, and downtown as well as a large number of Chesapeake and Suffolk residents.
